Sunburn Treatment - 10 Things To Do When It Hurts Bad

Needless to say, the best sunburn treatment is prevention. Having said that, almost everyone deals with sunburn while enjoying the hot days of summer. In fact, it is one of the major problems associated with participating in summer time activities. We all think about not getting too many UV rays, but it seems like no matter how hard we try to protect ourselves, invariably, we end up with sunburn at least one time every summer

Knowing what to do once you find yourself suffering bad sunburn is critical to both easing the pain and minimizing any potential permanent damage to the burned skin. Here are ten sunburn treatments that will ensure you accomplish both:

1. As soon as you realize you are sunburned. Immediately get out of the sun. It is amazing how many people will stay out in the sun even after they realize that they are burned. Some people even wait until after blisters appear to move to the shade or in the house.

2. Immediately after getting out of the sun gently wash any remaining sunscreen off the skin. Take cooling baths or gentle showers. Avoid high-pressure showers at this time as they will sting and further damage the sunburned skin. If you can manage it, take oatmeal baths several times a day, and continue the baths for 7-10 days. This soothing treatment for sunburn will immediately cool the skin down and will prevent further damage to the skin.

3. Avoid irritating the damaged skin anymore than it already is. No rubbing the tender skin especially around the nose and face in general. And, be particularly careful washing the skin on small children, Pat the skin dry with a soft towel rather than rubbing it dry with a new or rough textured towel.

4. Apply aloe-containing lotion or gel. Keep the skin moist with a "light" aloe based lotion. Avoid applying heavy creams, oils or ointments that are petroleum based as they can clog the pores and drive the burn even deeper. It is best to stick with aloe products and let the skin get as much air as possible to hasten healing time.

5. Leave the blisters intact. This may be difficult to do depending on the clothing that you have available, but it is important not to pop or break the blisters. They form a natural protective layer over the burn and are instrumental in preventing infection and scarring.

6. Keep yourself hydrated. Drinking lots of fluids after sunburn is essential in keeping you from further dehydration. If you are sunburned, then you can be sure that you are already suffering some degree of dehydration. Fluids means water, sports drinks, and juice. Avoid beer and other forms of alcohol and sodas, as all these will only add to your dehydrated condition.

7. Take OTC pain medication. Take as directed pain relievers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen. If you need stronger medication, see a Doctor or get to an ER dept.

8. While your sunburn is healing, wear loose, light colored clothing. Choose natural fabrics like soft cottons or silks rather than stiffer harsher fabrics, which tend to rub and irritate the skin. Wear a hat, sunscreen, and sunglasses. Avoid any activity that will add to the sunburn damage.

9. Be gentle with peeling skin. When your sunburn begins to peel, resist the urge to tear the pieces of skin off, instead continue applying the aloe lotion. The dead skin will be washed off in the shower. Picking the peeling skin off too soon could lead to infection. Just let nature take its course.

10. Stay out of the sun. Avoid the sun like the plague until you are completely healed. Your damaged skin does not need another dose of sunburn. Repeated sunburns have been linked to skin cancer.

If you have large blisters, ones that are bigger than two inches or if you sunburn covers a large part of your body, you need severe sunburn treatment, seek professional medical help immediately.

These measures will work to heal you sunburn withing about seven days, but if you need faster results, try this online that remedy that not only eliminates sunburn pain, blistering and peeling but it also brings sunburn itch relief in only five minutes.
